‘Looking Wider, Growing Stronger’

The Olave Baden-Powell Society event this year was held in Vancouver in April. Over 180 Olave Baden-Powell Society members and guests attended, together with some visitors from the Girl Guides of Canada - Guides du Canada.

At the Members’ meeting, those attending were updated on the work of the Society, and heard about the latest developments in WAGGGS and the activities of the Canadian Association.  Keynote speaker Dr Roberta Bondar, the first Canadian women astronaut, spoke to the members about her experiences and how they had shaped her approach to life. She showed some stunning photographs taken from outer space.

Bryanna Thiel, a young member from the Girl Guides of Canada - Guides du Canada explained how Girl Guiding had affected her life, and her growing realization of the scope of the work of WAGGGS. We look forward to meeting Bryanna again at the World Conference, as she will be part of the Canadian delegation.

Margaret Treloar and Della Salway, World Board members, outlined the developments of the WAGGGS Strategic Plan, and how it will influence the work of the World Association during the next triennium.  Finally, Mary McPhail, Chief Executive of WAGGGS, gave a detailed account of the work in which WAGGGS is involved, around the world, effectively showing Members the ways in which their donations are supporting WAGGGS.

Event participants enjoyed tours of Vancouver and its surroundings, and had the opportunity to spend time at the spectacular Museum of Anthropology, where the Presentation Ceremony was held. Thirty-one new OB-PS members were presented to HRH Princess Benedikte, and received their certificates and insignia with a backdrop of huge windows which framed the trees and a spectacular sunset.  Participants also enjoyed a dinner cruise around the harbour with views of the city, and reflections on the water.

Charlotte Christ-Weber and the Olave Baden-Powell Society Board are very grateful for the hard work of the host committee which helped to make the Event a success. Charlotte said:

"The theme of the Event – ‘Looking Wider - Growing Stronger’ was reflected in all aspects of the programme. Everybody was focused on the future of the Society, increasing its membership so that it can continue to support WAGGGS’ work and Mission. All Olave Baden-Powell Society members are trying hard to reach the goal of 1,000 members by 2009 Event in Korea."
